Artist Statement
My venture into the art world came as a natural offshoot from my work in renal microscopy research. Many colleagues were stunned by the beauty and complexity of the three dimensional volumes generated from my work. I then took these images and began forming mirror images to make seamless desktops for my computer; the subsequent interest in the images exploded.
These are high magnification images of the kidney. The morphologic complexity of the kidney naturally lends itself to some very beautiful images; adding the symmetry through processing augments their aesthetic appeal into the realm of the artistic.
The majority of the images in this portfolio are of renal images under normal physiology; these images produce the most appealing composites. Included are a few examples of various stages of kidney disease. These images produce more blurred and stagnant features, which is only magnified in the tessellations.
Persons from all backgrounds can appreciate the sharp lines and complex features of these images. The nuances of the features are sure to intrigue and arouse the interest of people in the research, medical and health care arena. These would be ideal to display in a treatment room where the differences between normal and diseased states of the kidney are expressed not as graphs or charts but as visual aesthetic differences the disease state imparts on this important part of our anatomy.
